7 How to make your own song about X
On this page, we will continue our step-by-step guide on how to create music for lyrics produced through generative AI use. We have added instructions on how to navigate the process using a popular AI music platform: Suno AI.
There are many AI platforms and applications that can be used to produce musical output. However, we will be covering Suno AI since it was used by the student in the student example and is a popular and free AI music platform. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to create your own music for the lyrics you generated on the previous page.
Using Suno AI
Begin by creating a free account on https://suno.com
Once the account has been created, navigate to the “create” section in the navigation bar on the left.
Toggle the “custom” tab to enter your own custom lyrics. Once the custom tab is toggled, sections will appear allowing you to enter and modify your lyrical prompt as well as adjust the style of the song. The advance options allow for vocal gender, style influence (may be turned up or down to match “style description”) and weirdness (allows for “wild, unexpected results”) to be adjusted.
Insert the lyrics you produced using Chat GPT into the “lyrics” text box. Continue to add a description of the style of the song you would like to create. We will be using the description create by the student in our previous section “using image, video and song generators creatively.” In the “style” text box type, “Blend elements of Indie and pop. The tone must be rousing and rebellious. Emphasise rhythmic guitar and layered harmonies in the chorus. The vibe should be empowering and defiant, an anthem of feminism and justice.” You can edit this description to further match the style you would like; electronic, metal, 80s rock etc.
Use the “advanced options” to select the gender of the vocalist. For this feminist song toggle the “female” option. Set the style influence and weirdness to the desired preference. For this example, these remained at the default setting. Add a title to your song. Type in “Digital Divide” in the “song title” text box and click the large create button.
You should have created your own creative song about the digital divide. You may go back and change the descriptions as well as the settings to produce your own desired output. Get creative! Mix and match genres to see what you can produce!
Answer the following questions as you evaluate your created song:
- What is your overall impression of the final musical output?
- How well do the musical elements (style, genre, effects etc.) support the theme expressed in your lyrics.
- In what ways would you adjust the description or settings to better align your music with your choice of lyrics.
- How does AI generated musical output compare with those produced manually? Do you believe AI proved to be an effective tool in producing your musical output?
