11 🌈 The Growly Engine Sound
Patricia Beltran
Guided Practice Script
Let’s wake up your /ɹ/ sound. Watch my mouth… rrrrr like a little growly bear. It’s your turn, let’s make your bear sound… rrrrr! Nice! Now copy me: rrr–red, rrr–rocket, rrr–rainbow
Let’s try a baby step for /ɹ/. Make your tongue stay up and stay inside without peeking out. Try this tiny sound: uhh–rrr… uhh–rrr… Good! Even if it’s not perfect, we’re getting closer. Now let’s slide it into a word: uhh–rrr… red, uhh–rrr… ring.
Here’s the secret trick for a strong /ɹ/.
- Keep your tongue tip up but not touching the top.
- Keep your lips relaxed — no smile, no pucker.
- Make your tongue feel like it’s curling back just a little.
Try it with me. Keep your tongue up and curl it back. rrrrr. Great!
Let’s try saying: red, rain, rock, rice, ring and rug. Now your turn! Amazing! Keep up the good work!
Targeted Techniques and Considerations
We worked on the /ɹ/ sound using simple instructions, and practiced copying the sound, they learned where to put their tongue and sliding from an easier sound like “uhhhh” into /ɹ/. Practice should begin with simple /ɹ/ words or the baseline ‘growling’ sound before progressing to more complex words.
Common Errors
- /ɹ/ produced as /w/ (“wabbit” for “rabbit”)
- /ɹ/ produced as /l/ (“led” for “red”)
- /ɹ/ produced as /ɚ/ (confusion in rhotic vowels)
