Let’s practice the TH sound. Listen: “thhhh”. Now it’s your turn — “thhhh”. Awesome!

Stick your tongue out just a tiny bit so it touches your top teeth, then blow soft air with your voice off.

Start with /s/ — “ssss” — then slide your tongue forward until it peeks out a little:
ssss → thhhh. YAY! You got it!

Let’s try these words: thumb, think, thin, third, path, thunder and brother. Can you feel that your tongue is kind between your teeth?

Targeted Techniques and Considerations

We worked on the /θ/ (“th”) sound, like thumb, we also taught them by having them copy the sound with knowing where to put their tongue (i.e., placement cues). Finally we taught them to shape the sound (i.e., approximation).

Common Errors

• /θ/ → often replaced with /f/ or /s/ (th‑fronting or stopping)

Variations

• Some dialects produce /θ/ as /f/ (“think” → “fink”)
