Now, we’re going to practice the /tʃ/ sound! Keep your tongue tip on the top part of your mouth right behind your teeth, like you’re making the /t/ sound [1].

Now make that /t/ sound! And now /ʃ/! Say those over and over like this: /t/ /ʃ/ /t/ /ʃ/… Keep saying them fast, fast fast! Try to combine them! [2] Amazing.

Do you feel like a champ? Say, “I’m a champ!” [3] Great!

Common /tʃ/ Sound Errors

• Error pattern: /tʃ/ distorted to be closer to /ʃ/

• • Likely cause:  The phonological process of distortion is where a child is mostly accurate in place, voice, and manner, but something is slightly off, distorting the sound. In this case, the distortion likely happens due to a lack of sharp exhalation.

Relevant Dialectical Considerations

• Many dialects influenced by German will substitute /tʃ/ with /k/; “chain” /tʃeɪn/
