12 Revving Up the /ɹ/ Sound
Stacey Zhang
Guided Practice Script
Let’s work on the /ɹ/ sound. During P.E. you have to run laps. The /ɹ/ sound is the first sound. Let’s try saying run together.
Make sure your lips aren’t moving. Curl your tongue to the back of your mouth and blow air over the tongue while using your voice.
Pretend you’re a car like Lightning McQueen! Every time you start your engine, you go /ɹ/ /ɹ/ /ɹ/. Good job!”
Target Techniques and Considerations
Techniques used in the script
- Modeling
- Phonetic Placement
- Verbal Instruction using a metaphor
Potential Sound Errors
- Production of /w/ instead of /ɹ/. This is commonly a result of excessive lip rounding and the tongue not being curled enough.
Dialectal Differences
- Scottish English often uses the alveolar tap /ɾ/ or trill /r/ in production of the sound.
