Let’s learn to make the L sound.  To get started, listen to mine: la, la, la. Your turn — la, la, la. Nice!

Let’s try to lift your tongue tip to touch right behind your top teeth. Keep your lips relaxed, not round. Turn your voice on.

Say /n/… now open your nose sound and let the air come out your mouth instead:
nnn → lll. Great switch!

Let’s try saying: light, leaf, look, love, lion, like, ladder, and laugh

Target Techniques and Considerations

We worked on modeling by having the child listen & copy (i.e., imitation), we also used sound approximation to help shape the sound of the letter, then we gave the child tips to help make the sound be produced correctly. Parents may want to practice with their child using wordplay while on a drive; this will help the child hear and practice the target phoneme in everyday settings.

Common Errors

• /l/ → often replaced with /w/ (gliding)

Variations

• Some dialects vocalize or alter /l/ in certain positions
