24 Number Bond

A number bond is a set of three numbers. A whole (the sum) and two parts (the addends). The pair of addends add up to give the sum (or the whole). Number bonds instantly reveal the answer without the need for actual calculation, so it’s handy to know them instantly.

Number bonds show us what the total will be when we add two numbers together. Do you know what adding the numbers 2+3 equals? Did you say 5? That’s right! In a number bond graph, like the one pictured below, you would write 5 in the big circle on the left, then write 2 in one small circle and 3 in the other small circle. Just by looking at the graph you would know 2+3=5 without having to count it. Can you think of other numbers that make 5 when added together?
