Minuend

Formal definition: A number from which another number (subtrahend) is to be subtracted. (Definition from: Merriam-Webster website).

Kid-friendly explanation: In a subtraction sentence, we have three numbers: Minuend, Subtrahend, and Difference. We can identify the Minuend in a subtraction problem because is the first and the biggest or whole number in the subtraction sentence. It is also called the “from” number.

Example from a subtraction problem:

Let’s say you had 8 toy cars to play, and you gave 2 of your cars to your brother. Now, you want to know how many cars you do have left. Here, you will need to use a subtraction sentence like this:

Here the 8 toy cars are the Minuend number. As you see is the first number and the biggest number in the subtraction sentence.
