32 Rounding

Audrina Alvarado

Definition:

  1. The process of replacing a number with another number of approximately the same value but having fewer digits.
  2. To change a number to the nearest value, as requested by the problem or context of the math situation. Depending on if you are changing the number from tens, hundreds, or thousands.

Example:

Rounding numbers up and down is important in real-life. For example, while you’re shopping at the store, should you round UP or DOWN to be sure you have enough money to buy your items at the check out?

Look at this receipt. When this bird owner buys bird seed, what dollar amount should they round up to so they’re certain to have enough money to pay at the check out?
