Expanded form is a way to write numbers so the value of each digit is easy to see and understand. The place of each digit tells us how much that digit is worth. Expanded form numbers are usually written with plus signs because when each value is added together, it equals the original number.

For example: 673 written in expanded form is

600 + 70 + 3

The 6 is in the hundreds place, so the value is 600. The 7 is in the tens place, so the value is 70. The 3 is in the ones place, so the value is 3. See the plus signs? When you add 600 + 70 + 3 together you get 673.

See if you can come up with the total value of

700 + 50 + 7

Did you get 757? Good!

Now you try. What is 895 written in expanded form?
