Standard form is the simplest, most common way to write a number. You see numbers written in standard form everywhere. Each digit in standard form represents a value so we know what the number is worth. For example, the number 832 has 8 in the hundreds place, 3 in the tens place and 2 in the ones place, so we say eight hundred thirty-two. Do you notice how long it would take to write it out using words? Can you imagine trying to add numbers when they are written in long form? It would be confusing! It’s much easier to write 832.
Now you try. What is four hundred fifty-three written in standard form? Did you write 453? Good!
What is eighteen plus twenty written in standard form?
18 + 20 is much easier to add in standard form. What is the answer? Did you come up with 38? Great! Now try the next one. What did you get adding 57 + 13?
18 + 20 = 38
57 + 13 = ??
