- Official Definition: A mathematical statement that shows that two mathematical expressions are equal.
- Children-Friendly language: An equation is a way of saying two things are the same. We use the equal sign,“=”, to show that the things on the left and the things on the right are the same.
- What things can we put on both sides of the equal sign?
- They can be a number and a statement of calculation (+,-,*,/). For example, 1+3=4;
- They can be two numbers. For example, 0.4=⅖.
- They can be 2 statements of calculation. For example, 7+5=7+3+2.
- If there are several things that are the same, you can also use the equal sign to connect them all together. For example, 2+2=3+1=5-1=2*2=8/2=4.
- What things can we put on both sides of the equal sign?
