More Tips for Teaching Math Vocabulary
As you browse the dictionary, keep in mind that teaching mathematical vocabulary should be contextual. Here are some tips to get you started.
HOW DO WE TEACH MATH VOCABULARY?
- Intentionally (make time to introduce, explore, review)
- Purposefully (use curriculum as guide)
- Engagingly (use games, lessons, and activities)
- By integrating it into body of math lesson (when it makes sense)
- By reviewing terms often (use games)
- By modeling the correct use of terms (always aim for accuracy)
- By scaffolding children’s developing mathematical vocabularies (reinforce attempts during discussions)
TIPS FOR TEACHING VOCABULARY
- Use math vocabulary in everyday classroom situations, not just during math. For example, the mathematical term for a drinking glass is a cylinder. A box is a rectangular prism.
- Help children see that using the “correct” term helps them share their ideas more easily.
- Create a math word wall. Interact with it as much as possible. The teacher should always model correct usage.
- Make time to teach vocabulary intentionally through concept-building games that promote understanding not just memorization.
