Subtrahend
Formal definition: A number that is to be subtracted from a minuend. (Definition from Merriam-Webster website).
Kid-friendly explanation: Subtrahend is that quantity or part of the subtraction sentence that is needed to take away from the whole part (minuend).
In subtraction, we have three numbers: Minuend, Subtrahend, and difference; the subtrahend number tell as how many or how much quantity we need to take out of the whole part (Minuend).
Example: Let’s say we have 5 peaches(minuend) and 2 of those peaches are already rotten, so we cannot eat them, right? We need to take these 2 peaches away, remove them, or simply cross them out. These 2 peaches that we are crossing out are the subtrahend of our operation, is the quantity of peaches we need to take away from the whole number (minuend).
